Nitto Denko/Hydranautics SWC5 Water Desalination Membrane Wins Prestigious Nikkei Award

Hydranautics’ SWC5 spiral wound reverse osmosis element has received the “2007 Nikkei Keizai Shimbun Award for Excellence,” the highest-ranked among the Nikkei Superior Products and Services (NSPS) Awards. In their 26th year, the NSPS awards (sponsored by Nikkei – a leading Japanese economic daily) are given to new products and services deemed to be especially superior. Chosen from 20,000 products that have been covered by articles in four Nikkei papers (Nikkei proper, Business, Marketing and Finance), the selections are made by taking into account such factors as achievement in technical development of product or service, cost efficiency, contribution to corporate financial performance, market growth potential, originality, and potential for impact on industry and society. The 2007 Nikkei Keizai Shimbun Award for Excellence award will be presented to Hydranautics’ parent company, Nitto Denko, at the award ceremony scheduled in Tokyo for February 1, 2008.

BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand):
BOD is a non-specific test that measures the quantity of "biologically-degradable" organic matter and is reported as "ppm as oxygen". The test measures the quantity of oxygen depletion resulting from the ability of common bacteria to digest organic matter during a 5-day incubation period at 20o C.

COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand):
COD is a non-specific test that measures the quantity of both bio-degradable and non-biodegradable organic matter and is reported as "ppm as oxygen". The test measures the ability of a hot chromic acid solution to oxidize organic matter. COD can be roughly estimated as three times the TOC levels. To avoid excessive fouling, a recommended maximum for COD in the feed is 15 ppm.

Meq/l:
A method of reporting the concentration or "equivalent" weight of an ion or substance in a given volume of water as milli-equivalents per liter. Meq/l is calculated by dividing the mg/l by the equivalent weight of the ion or substance. Reporting the concentration of ions as meq/l is popular by RO chemists for determining whether a water analysis is "balanced" where the sum of the cations equals the sum of the anions. Meq/l = mg/l / equivalent weight

The conductivity of the product water has gone up sharply but the flows and pressures have not changed considerably. What is wrong?
In most cases the problem is related to sealing failures such as in-between elements, disconnects at the end caps or rolled o-rings at either position resulting in disconnects. The first step in determining the problem is to profile the system to determine which vessel is producing the poor quality water. Once this is determined the operator should probe the vessel (see Technical Service Bulletin 114) to determine the location of the problem. From this information the necessary connections can be repaired and o-rings can be replaced as necessary. As well, the proper shimming can be completed (see Technical Service Bulletin 109).
